In 1888 Bennett Jannetta left the small village of Atina, near Casino, in Italy and travelled to Dysart in Scotland. Amongst the few possessions he brought with him was his delicious recipe for traditional Italian ice cream. Twenty years later, in 1908, Bennett opened his popular and fashionable soda parlour at 31 South Street in St Andrews. The shop has been through many changes since then, but his name is still found above the shop today. Jannettas has been a family business since it was founded and is now one of the oldest family businesses in St Andrews. Bennett’s son, Charlie, ran the shop until the early 60’s. His daughter Fiona and son-in-law David then took over. Now it is in the capable hands of their daughter Nicola and her husband Owen, the fourth generation. Nicola and Owen still use the closely guarded recipe that Bennett brought over with him. However times have moved on since Bennett’s day and there are now many more flavours based around this recipe. Since it was founded the hallmark of Jannettas has been the use of the freshest and highest quality ingredients. This continues today and the result is ice cream that is now world famous and has won numerous awards. |
